West Head National Park, Sydney
If you’re looking for a beautiful day out, look no further than a short drive from the CBD of Sydney. Situated in the Kuringai Chase National Park, you’ll find the breathtaking West Head look out.
Here, you can see Broken Bay on your left, Pittwater on your right and Barrenjoey Headland and Lighthouse in front.
You can also enjoy amazing vistas across the Hawkesbury River to Lion Island Nature Reserve and the beaches of the Central Coast, including Patonga and Umina Beach.
Even just driving in to the car park, before you even step out of the car it is easy to be overwhelmed by the view. Standing so high above the water below and gazing out over the headlands, you can’t help but feel slightly insignificant compared to this natural beauty.
There are various picnic areas, as well as a large sandstone viewing platform with signs clearly showing all points of interest from this amazing lookout.
We decided to do a bush walk while we were there, and set off down towards Resolute Beach. From the car park it is about a 5km round trip, but as we were so high up, the walk itself can be quite tricky at times due to the steep nature of the descent. Also, keep in mind – what goes down, must come back up! So just remember this for the return journey as you will be tackling a LOT of stairs!
Resolute beach is beautiful. So remote, and untouched. There were a few boats anchored in little cove when we arrived, but apart from them we had the whole place to ourselves. It was certainly worth the bush walk down.
Golden sands, greeny/blue water and stunning rock formations all set to the backdrop of the bush. It was so peaceful, sitting on the rocks listening to the calming sounds of the waves roll in while the birds sang happily away behind us.
West Head is certainly a lookout I am planning on visiting again. Stumbling across this magnificent place was truly a highlight. Kuringai Chase National Park has many wonderful picnic areas, lookouts and bush walks. I cannot wait to return and visit more of this area of Sydney.
